One of the main issues I found with Pencil Case V1 was that it took up a lot of space for almost no reason. So when redesigning it, I made sure to include space for any small item that I may end up losing or breaking if I simply were to throw it in a bag. The 4 items I ended up added in addition to the Apple Pencil 2 and USB A to USB C adapter were a Microsoft Surface Pen for my laptop, a USB C to lightning adapter, a USB C to USB A adapter, and a USB C/USB A flash drive. Another issue with the previous design I was running into was, if I were to open the case in any orientation other than flat, the pen, and sometimes the USB A to USB C adapter, would fall out. To solve this issue, in the bottom half of the case, I inserted 8 magnets from the underside, then covered them up with 2 feet plates, similar to how a laptop covers screw holes beneath rubber feet.
When it came to the lid, I also believed with the previous design that there was a lot of wasted space, but I couldn’t have the design go without a cover. So, I kept a similar sliding action to the original design, this time going horizontal instead of on an angle, then added a hinge where the lid could pivot once it hit the end of its track. Once pivoted, the case can be turned into a landscape phone via the Mag Safe ring surrounding the very loud obnoxious logo that, looking back, I would remove or make smaller.
I have been using this design as a replacement to V1 for several months now and I have found it extremely handy and much more useful than the original but there are certainly still some issues to work out.
